How to write LinkedIn posts in your own voice

Most posts that sound generic aren't badly written. They're written from nothing in particular. Here's what makes a post sound like a specific person.

Start from something you said, not a topic

“Write a post about leadership” gets you the average of every post about leadership. “The week we lost our biggest client and what I told the team on Monday” gets you a post about something that happened to you. Before you write, find the story: a decision, a number, a mistake, a conversation. If you can’t find one, you don’t have a post yet.

Talk first, then write

People are more themselves out loud. Record yourself telling the story to a colleague, or have someone ask you about it, and write from the transcript. Keep the phrases you actually use. Cut the filler you make while thinking (“like”, “you know”, false starts): nobody writes those down, and leaving them in reads as a transcript rather than as you.

Cut the lines that could be anyone's

Read each line and ask whether a stranger could have written it. “Here’s the thing”, “it’s not X, it’s Y”, “and that’s the part that matters” could be anyone’s, and readers skim them. Replace each one with the specific thing it was standing in for, or delete it. Our free AI phrase checker highlights the common ones.

Hold it no more firmly than you believe it

A post that claims more certainty than you have sounds wrong to the people who know you. If you said “I think” when you told the story, keep “I think”. If you haven’t measured it, don’t give a number.

How On Record does this for you

On Record interviews you, keeps your stories with your words verbatim, and builds a voice profile from how you actually talk. Every draft is built from that material, checked against your own sentences before you see it, and stripped of the stock lines above. You approve each post, and it learns from your edits.

Start with the interview

On Record interviews you about your own work, learns how you talk, and drafts posts from what you said. The first interview is free and needs no card.
